I am extremely lucky to live where I do in sunny Weymouth, Dorset.
I am for sure an outdoor person, and thrive whilst surrounded by the beauty of nature around me. I find it easy to day dream which often transpires me staring at a tree for a considerable amount of time. Trust me, I am not a weirdo.. ;)
The truth is the beauty of the surrounding areas are forever changing and give a real perspective on life with the stresses constantly being fed.
The landscapes that encapsulate the essence of Dorset are vast, from Forests, to river banks and coastal walks, there is so much to be inspired by.
If you are looking to explore Dorset in a nature freak out, I would suggest giving the below a visit, they are breathtaking!
My top 5 places to explore the natural landscape in Dorset:
Stair Hole and Lulworth Cove
Located: Lulworth, Wareham, BH19 1LB
Situated a stones throw from the famous Durdle Door, is the beautiful Stair Hole, and Lulworth Cove. Nestled in the small English village of... you guessed it.. Lulworth! HA!
There are a number of walks you can take from both of these locations. A coastal path from Lulworth Cove towards Swanage will bring you to a fastinating Fossil Forest, which will enable you to step back millions of years.
Stair Hole is popular with water enthuasists, from snorkelling to coastering, due to the isolating nature of the location. The rock formation here is something to be desired. It is awesome to stare at! ;)
This location has been inspiration of my Art, it is a sight to behold at sunset!
Lulworth is also extremely clear at night due to the limited light pollution, go have a look at those stars guys!
'An Evening at Lulworth Cove' is a watercolour painting, partnered with ink.
Although, the original art of this has now sold, I have greeting cards and prints of this available, please drop me a message if you were interested in purchasing!
4. Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve
Located: Isle of Portland
I love exploring Portland, there is alot of hidden gems here. It might be because of location, but this isle is full of history, fascinating Geology, and you guessed it... nature!
One particular place I would like to highlight is Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve. This used to be a stone quarry but has now been abandoned and is a sculpture park boasting over 60 hidden sculptures. I love the way nature has taken over this with the contrast between the organic and man made.
I have given a run down of places of interest that might take your fancy I would, however, I strongly suggest that you go for a wonder and see what you find!
'Portland Bill Lighthouse' is an acrylic painting on a cotton mounted board This signed original, is still for sale. Please drop me a message if you were interested in purchasing!
Charmouth Beach, Dorset
Located: Bridport, DT6 6LS
Just a little down the road from Lyme Regis, is where my number 3 is settled.
A quieter and not so well known beach called in Charmouth, is full of fossils, is quite large, and boasts a really stunning Jurassic Coast.
If you like fossils, this one if for you!
I have based an ink artwork on this location called, you guessed it... 'Charmouth Beach'. This is for sale, please drop me a message if this is something you would like to take home as souveneir!
2. Thorncombe Wood Local Nature Reserve
Located: Dorchester, DT2 8QH
Nestled just outside of the town of Dorchester. This woodland is beautiful all year round. However, a gander through during springtime is breathtaking with the appearance of snowdrops and bluebells.
If you like History this one is for you also, a well preserved Roman road runs through the site, which would have stretched from Dorchester to Badbury Rings.
Looking for inspiration?
Thorncombe Woods is also adjacent to Hardy's Cottage, as part of the National Trust. This is the birthplace and home of local novelist and poet Thomas Hardy. Follow in his steps in the woods which have been described in his books 'The Woodlanders' and 'Return of the Native'.
'Thorncombe Woods in Spring' is a acrylic painting, partnered with ink.
Inspired by the Blubells and the light shining through the green trees.
The original art of this has now sold. Please keep an eye on my Instagram for my next art pieces, I may create further pieces on this area.
Moreton Ford and Forest
Located: Moreton, DT2 8BB
Moreton is a small village around 6 miles outside of Dorchester. Tucked away from the buzz, is the ford with beautiful walks transporting through the tranquil forest scenery.
The River Frome passes through this location, giving a perfect setting to walk the dog on those hot days, or a trip out with the family. This is somewhere I treasure dearly, with memories of bike rides with friends as a child and dog walks with Rosie and family as an adult.
About a 5 minute walk away from the ford, is the walled gardens. Which boasts 5 Acres of formal gardens, tea rooms, and a shop.
'Moreton Forest' is a watercolour painting. I started painting this whilst sat in the middle of the forest being the fairy I am.
Inspired by the ever changing lanscape of the forest that changes from season to season.
The original art of this has now sold. Please keep an eye on my Instagram for my next art pieces, I may create further pieces on this area.
